No Cal + So Cal [Monday
July 12th, 2004

I am definitely not ready for the Internet!

We returned "early", two or three days ago, although days don't really matter to me know that it's summer and there aren't any deadlines. The only things in my immediate future are the Warped Tour tomorrow and work... so obviously I'll be living in my near past for as long as possible!

After Redding, we were treated to 45 degree Celsius heat, which is not bearable, even if you were born on top of a heat register. We headed out to the highway to drive as close to the ocean as we could without driving in (only Westfalia vans float in water, and this one is a Honda). Around 11pm on what we later discovered to be a Friday or Saturday night, we found ourselves in eight lanes of traffic, bottlenecking for a toll-booth that only accepts exact change. The best solution for getting through -according to the American SUV Drivers Association, San Francisco County Chapter- is to honk or lean on the car horn before and during the toll paying. This way, they can justify dashing out of the toll booth at mach four surrounding a car of "Look, a black person wearing ice" Canadians travelling at the posted speed. They didn't slow down for the heaven-white tunnel, or the Golden Gate Bridge, upon which we all of a sudden drove. I mean, it's like on of America's seven wonders of the world, after Hoover Dam and Krispy Kreme donuts!

Anyhow, we made it across with white knuckles (me) and huge laughs (Justin) and turned ourselves towards the Coast highway ...Collapse )

WA + OR vs. CAL [Friday

Hello everyone!
It's just after noon here in Redding, California, about two hours south of the border, and it's 90 degrees Farenheit, which is about 32 degrees Canadian and too hot for me. Earlier this morning it was already up to 35, which just boggles the mind. It turns out that 33 degrees is my boiling point; I was positively wilting last night at 7pm when we reached Castle Crags State Park.

We drove for ages yesterday only to be met by a park ranger with perfect hair's lecture-lite on the risks of bears and leaving food in vehicles overnight. Did you know that bears are strong enough to rip through car doors if they can smell anything remotely appetizing (steak, soda cans, Old Spice deodorant), yet somehow never become a threat to campers in flimsy $100 tents fifteen feet nearby? It makes one appreciate things, although I'm not sure which things at the moment!

We hiked for a maximum five minutes this morning to a breathtaking view of the crags and humongous black flying beetles that might have been grenades with wings.

Afterwards, we hit up a Denny's for a cheap and filling breakfast - they serve bottles of Tabasco sauce instead of HP, which is a huge disappointment for me, but minor in the grand scheme of things. The next time we're at a Denny's for lunch, we have vowed to order the "A Cinderella Story" (starring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray) themed meals, such as a cheeseburger with pink ranch dressing on the side, and a cherry Sprite. Included is a free promotional movie poster, which you know is the only reason we'd eat pastel coloured sauces!
